Today is National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day… this is a thoughtful and informative article with great links about the gross disparity in HIV/AIDS rates among Black Americans.
“Overall, while African Americans make up a mere 14 percent of the overall U.S. population, they account for more than half of all new HIV infections that are diagnosed each year.”
This isn’t right, damnit. Maine may not be the most culturally diverse state, but the disparity still exists here—Blacks make up a little over 1% of the state population, but represented 9% of new HIV diagnoses last year. I’m glad to be fighting the good fight, but public health can’t do it alone… don’t stay silent—speak out!
